Soccer tryouts in Encinitas and across North County San Diego are right around the corner, and this year feels especially competitive. With age group shifts and added club sessions, players are feeling the pressure to stand out. The truth is, tryouts aren’t won with flashy moments — they’re won in the details. Coaches notice first touch, composure under pressure, work rate, and how players respond when things don’t go their way. Preparation doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does need to be intentional. Here are five simple ways players can show up confident, sharp, and ready to separate themselves.
UPCOMING TRYOUTS
Our top 5 tips to prepare and standout
1. Get more touches now
Between now and tryouts, focus on simple ball work every day: juggling, dribbling, and quick touches. You don’t need fancy drills just consistent time on the ball to feel sharp and confident.
2. Control what you can control
Effort, attitude, and body language matter more than people think. Coaches notice players who compete, stay engaged, and respond well even when things aren’t going their way.
3. Play brave
Mistakes will happen. What stands out is how a player reacts: do they recover quickly, work to win the ball back, and stay positive? Confidence isn’t about being perfect; it’s about staying in the play.
4. Keep moving after the mistake
Don’t freeze, complain, or check out. Sprint back, re-engage, and be useful on the next action. Coaches remember players who respond with urgency.
5. Introduce yourself at the right moment
During a water break or transition, a quick introduction can go a long way. Eye contact, a handshake, your name, and a simple “thank you for the opportunity” shows confidence, maturity, and respect and helps a coach remember you.
